What Does “Anazao” Mean?
A Name Rooted in Second Chances
Anazao is not a word you hear every day. If you’ve seen the name, you may have wondered what it means. That’s a good question, and the answer helps explain who we are and why we’re here. Because Anazao is more than a name. It’s a story.
The word Anazao comes from Greek. It means “to live again.” That may sound big and profound, but the idea is simple. It means a fresh start, a second chance, or a chance to move forward. Sometimes it feels like hitting reset. Other times, it’s just one small step in the right direction. That idea (to live again) is at the center of what we do.
Where We Started
Anazao has been part of this community for over 40 years. We started in 1972 as the Wayne County Council on Addictions. Back then, we focused on helping people with substance use and addiction. We worked closely with schools, courts, and other local groups. People in those systems knew us and trusted us, but many in the wider community did not. Over time, we also saw that the needs in our community were growing and changing.
More Than a Service
As those needs changed, so did our role. We were not just offering services anymore. We were working alongside schools, supporting families, and stepping in when there were gaps in care. We kept hearing the same thing from others: “You’re a partner.” That mattered. It changed how we saw ourselves. We knew our name should reflect that, not just what we do, but how we help. We wanted people to see us as a true community partner, someone who shows up, listens, and responds.
But we still needed a name that meant something more.
The Moment That Changed Everything
The turning point came from a simple moment. Someone who had gone through recovery said, “This agency gave me my life back.” That stayed with us. Later, we thought more about that idea: live again. In Greek, there is a word for that: Anazao. It means to live again, to start fresh, to get another chance. That became our name.
What “Live Again” Looks Like
“Live again” does not always look like a big change all at once. Most of the time, it looks like small steps. It might be a parent learning how to connect with their child again. It might be a teen finding better ways to handle stress or anger. It might be someone in recovery building a daily routine, one day at a time. It might be a family staying together during a hard season. These changes matter, and they grow over time.
That’s where we come in. Through therapy, school support, and other services, we walk alongside people as they take those steps. We keep things clear and manageable. You don’t have to fix everything at once. You just need a place to begin and someone to help guide you forward.
How We Help Today
Today, Anazao supports children, teens, adults, and families across our community. But how we help is just as important as what we provide. We work closely with schools, families, and community partners so people don’t feel alone. We respond quickly when someone needs help. We also work to make care accessible. We accept Medicaid, and for many families, services cost $0.
Our goal is simple: get the right help to the right person at the right time. We want support to feel clear, helpful, and easy to start .
Who We’re Here For
If you are a parent and something feels off with your child, you are not alone. If you are a student feeling stressed or overwhelmed, you are not the only one. If you don’t know where to start, that’s okay. You don’t need to have the right words. You just need a place to begin.
Anazao is not just what we call ourselves. It’s what we hope for every person we serve. A fresh start. A new path forward. A chance to feel like yourself again. A chance at life again.
